HotelTonight – West End Atlanta Hotels at Your Fingertips
Just west of downtown Atlanta, you'll find one of the city's treasured historic neighborhoods, the West End. Since it was founded in the 1830s, the West End has been one of the epicenters of life and culture in Atlanta. Its roots are deeply ingrained in African American culture and history, and today it's one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods. After visiting Atlanta a few years back, the vibrant neighborhood of West End immediately drew me in, so I vowed to stay in this neighborhood if I ever returned to Atlanta. This past spring, I had the opportunity to return to this Georgia metropolis, so I pulled up my HotelTonight app and booked a great last-minute hotel in West End Atlanta. In just a few minutes, I had a charming hotel room waiting for me in the heart of the West End and was ready to start exploring this historic neighborhood.
West End Trail
Atlanta's West End Trail is the first section of the Beltline, a 33-mile urban trail that winds through the city. The West End Trail stretches for 2.4 miles, connecting the West End with neighborhoods like Mozley Park and Westview. Upon arriving in the West End, one of my first discoveries was just how much locals love this urban trail. It provides a much-needed green space in the heart of the city, and locals take advantage of the well-maintained trail by walking, biking and running along it. I strongly believe that public spaces and parks infinitely enhance the quality of life in a neighborhood, and the West End Trail certainly gives locals a great quality of life in the heart of Atlanta.
The College Community
The West End is home to the Atlanta University Center, which is composed of Spelman College, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University. This area is a hub of historically black colleges and universities, and it's well worth spending an afternoon exploring these college campuses and getting a feel for the area's history and college culture. As a major center for HBCU's, the West End plays a key role in Atlanta's education scene, and you can get a sense of the significance of these universities by attending special lectures, performances and open galleries on campus.
A Historical Gem
The West End's development commenced in the 1830s, thus it's home to some of Atlanta's most historic buildings and sites. The streets of the West End are lined with beautiful Victorian mansions and historic bungalow homes that have been carefully maintained over the decades. If you love history and architecture, taking a leisurely stroll or even a quick drive through the West End's neighborhoods will be quite a treat.
