HotelTonight – Effingham Hotels Just for You
I drive a lot for work as a traveling salesperson. Every time I get a new territory, which is every couple of years, I get excited because it means that I'll get to explore some new cities. Not too long ago, I was assigned a big part of the Midwest. That was great, as I had driven through most of the rest of the United States often, but only a few times had I been to this part of the world. I couldn't wait to get started on my work and my travels. One day, I was driving from Chicago to St. Louis when I got a call from the office. My meetings in St. Louis for the next day had been canceled, so I suddenly had 24 hours to myself. I decided to do what I've done often in the past, which was choose a community nearby and spend the day there. I happened to be near a place called Effingham, and that's where I decided to spend my day. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd simply open the app and book an Effingham hotel room when it was time.
Downtown
One of the things I've noticed about the smaller communities in the Midwest is their idyllic nature. Effingham was no different, especially downtown. This community of approximately 12,000 people looks like one of those towns from an old movie. The buildings are all relatively close to each other in size, they're mostly built with bricks and the streets are extremely clean. The people all seem to know each other and all of them took a moment to greet me in a friendly way as I walked around downtown for a little while. This was a happy place.
The Hiking
When you're in the middle of the Midwest, you're in the middle of a lot of wide-open areas for the most part. Effingham is no different. Just outside of the main part of town is a hiking trail that I simply had to try, being a hiker myself. The trail was gorgeous. It was covered with old oak trees, it wound around near cornfields and marshy ponds and it simply took me back in time for a bit to when settlers probably first encountered this part of the map. I talked to a few people out there, took some photos and had a very nice time.
The Dining
After all that walking, I was extremely hungry. A nice lady on the hiking trail told me about a pizza place in town that had earned a loyal following. I gave it a try, and it looked like an old-time pizza place, complete with a bar and several different types of pizza. I ordered the Chicago style, and it was more than I could handle. I ate about half of the delicious pie, which was too much, but I could not put it down.
