I drive through Iowa a lot for work. I know the interstates there like the back of my hand and am used to taking them to make sure I maximize my time working and not driving. Downtown
Sometimes when I hear people describe a place as idyllic, I become quite skeptical because I think that's a term that should only be used rarely and when it's well-deserved. However, that was the first word that popped into my head when I pulled into Mount Pleasant, and for good reason. The downtown area was something directly out of the 1950's. The streets were lined with old buildings with brick facades, the sidewalks were clean and the people were out and about, greeting each other warmly and with obvious familiarity. Everyone was as nice as could be to me as well. This was a happy place.
The Museums
Only about 8,000 people live in Mount Pleasant, and that's one of the reasons I was surprised to see so many different museums there. I counted at least four of them, but I may have even missed one. I chose to go spend time in the railroad museum and in the theater museum, and even spent about 2.5 hours in each because I was so mesmerized by the different exhibits there. I also got a chance to talk to some people who were touring them as well, and nearly all of them were local.
The Dining
During the day, I had heard several people talking about a Thai place in town that was really serving good meals. I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. I went with the Thai fried rice and spring rolls, and the food was tremendous. The rice was cooked perfectly and they didn't scrimp on the meat. The spring rolls were fresh, crunchy and very tasty. The sauce that came with them was the perfect mix of flavorful and hot.
