HotelTonight – Last-Minute Hotels in Brunswick, Maine

Brunswick, Maine is a pretty New England town about 30 minutes north of Portland. This coastal town is rich in history, as it was settled back in 1628, and has only continued to grow and evolve in the centuries since. Brunswick prides itself on its history, and I noticed a certain air of nostalgia as I walked its streets, which seemed to be painted with charm and character. This sense of nostalgia and character made me feel instantly connected to the city, and I couldn't help but obsess and wonder over every little charming detail and cultural element of Brunswick that made the town unique. Exploring the town of Brunswick was the highlight of my Maine vacation, but my Brunswick getaway almost didn't happen at all. I had originally planned on staying in Portland for five days during my trip, but after a few locals recommended I also visit Brunswick, I made a last-minute adjustment to my travel plans. To find a great deal on a last-minute hotel in Brunswick, I checked out HotelTonight. After perusing the app's selection of Brunswick hotels for a few minutes, I booked the perfect hotel in the heart of Brunswick. Then I hopped in my rental car and made the short drive from Portland to Brunswick.

Maine Street

The historic Maine Street of Brunswick is the pride and joy of the town. This picturesque street is dotted with colorful, old-fashioned storefronts that are a treat to the eye. Taking a leisurely stroll down Maine Street is a must when visiting Brunswick, because there's no better way to understand the laidback lifestyle of this town than to explore its treasured main drag. Of course, there's much more to do on Maine Street than just walk. I spent hours popping into the various boutiques and shops along Maine, as well as eating delicious local cuisine at several of the popular restaurants along the boulevard.

The Mall

The Brunswick Mall is a hub of activity and energy, and it's one of the most used meeting places for events and social gatherings in Brunswick. The Mall, which is what locals call the village's greenway, regularly hosts live concerts and festivals, so locals spend quite a bit of time at this picturesque green park. Even when there are no events going on at the Mall, you'll still find locals there – it's a great spot for picnics and for letting kids play. In the winter months, locals go to the Mall to enjoy the giant ice skating rink.

Markets

No matter what time of year it is, you can find a market in Brunswick. During the warmer months, locals go to the Crystal Springs Farmers' Market to shop for fresh produce and locally made goods. From November to April, when it's too cold to enjoy an outdoor shopping experience, locals go to the Brunswick Winter Market at Fort Andross. I always love to shop and eat like a local when I travel, so I visited the Crystal Springs Farmers' Market while in town. There was so much delicious food that I almost didn't know how to choose what to buy. Eventually, I filled my grocery bag and made my way to the Mall to enjoy my Maine picnic.

The River

Brunswick is bordered by the Androscoggin River, which is one of the hubs of recreational activity for locals, because along its banks you'll find the Androscoggin River Bicycle and Pedestrian Path. This well-maintained riverfront path stretched for 2.63 miles from Water Street to Grover Lane, and it's the perfect distance for a nice scenic bike ride (or walk, run or rollerblade).

The College

Brunswick is home to the prestigious Bowdoin College, which was established in 1794. The college plays an important role in the rich artistic and intellectual culture of the town, and its museums, theater and concert hall provide much of the entertainment and arts for locals. I believe that without Bowdoin, the city of Brunswick would be much different, and probably not for the better. The college imbues Brunswick with a youthful, energetic presence, and it's part of the reason why I was so captivated by the town the moment I arrived.
