Baltimore, Maryland is a wondrous place with so many aspects to it that it would be impossible to list them all in a reasonable amount of time. Like any large city, Baltimore is made up of many different pieces that all come together to form one community. Every community goes through its ups and downs, and what's important is that the people of the area stick together and continue to work through those difficult times in order to revitalize the neighborhood or city overall. The Middle East neighborhood of Baltimore has seen some rough times and some good times. I wanted to check in and see for myself how it was coming back from its most recent struggles. I had heard a lot of good things, so I decided to take a 24-hour trip there. I care about this beautiful place that I've been visiting since I was a child. I wasn't concerned ahead of time about finding lodging. The New Homes
One of the nice things about Baltimore is that even if a neighborhood falls on tough times, there is still a lot of foundational material with which to work when it's time to bring things back. That's definitely the case here in Middle East, as there are buildings here that are over 100 years old and in some cases even older. A lot of them are being updated, cleaned up and refurbished so that they look good and are more modern. There are some new homes being built as well, and the ones that I saw were tasteful and fit right in with the big picture.
The Park
There is also a centerpiece in Middle East that is really worth building around and featuring. Eager Park is not just a park, although in that sense it is huge and filled with green space for kids, dogs and people in general to enjoy. This is also a place where they show outdoor movies. Every week when the weather is warm, they have a farmer's market here that I'm told is a big draw not only for local residents but for people from other parts of Baltimore. There are free concerts here as well from time to time. It's a lovely place.
The Restaurants
After seeing such encouraging signs in this part of town, I decided to go find some dinner in the neighborhood. What better than the type of cuisine that matches the name of the community? I was told about a place that served incredible Middle Eastern food, and I could smell it before I even walked into the place. The food was incredible. I had kabobs of beef and lamb that were out of this world, and the pita bread was something else.
