HotelTonight – Duluth Hotels Are Available
When I drive around in the northern part of the Midwest, particularly in Minnesota and Wisconsin, I'm generally in a happy place. That's because there is no hustle and bustle in this part of the world that you see in major metropolitan areas and that tends to tire people out. Instead, I like that I'm surrounded by enormous pine trees, pristine forests, freshwater lakes everywhere and friendly communities that make you feel welcome no matter where you stop. One city I had never really gotten to experience until recently, however, was Duluth. I had always wanted to visit as I had heard that it's unique. I had been to Superior many times for work but never had the time to take a look across the state border to see what was happening. That all changed on my last trip there. I wound up with a day to myself. All I had to figure out was what to do with that day and where to sleep. As for the latter, I had no concern at all, as I travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a hotel room in Duluth as soon as I was ready to crash.
Downtown
As soon as I pulled into Duluth, I knew I was somewhere interesting. The entire city seemingly sits on a hill that falls into downtown along Lake Superior. Downtown itself was also interesting, in that it's an eclectic but tasteful mix of old and new. I saw modern commercial developments standing right next to old brick buildings that had obviously been there for generations. The entire area felt like a small town, though, as people milled about and talked to each other. I could not get over how friendly everyone was when I asked questions or for directions.
The Hiking
When you combine hills, a lot of trees, bodies of water and areas that have never really been touched by humans, you're going to have some good hiking. I love to hike, and a lady in town told me about a loop that ran through the nearby elevated areas to provide great views of the city and Lake Superior. She was right. I walked around for well over an hour, stopping often to snap photos of the rugged terrain, the colorful trees and the civilization below. It was time well-spent, and I also got to talk to a few more locals.
The Dining
After a big hike and a day of walking around in general, I decided I wanted a big dinner. For some reason, there were a lot of Italian restaurants in town, and I heard about one that had been there for many years. I walked in and it was a classic Italian restaurant look – checkered table cloths, etc. The smell was incredible, and my meat lasagna was the perfect combination of meaty, delicate and hearty. I had a great glass of wine with it and enjoyed everything.
