These pretty, quintessential East Coast towns are not often at the top of travel lists, but I believe they definitely deserve more recognition than they get. After all, Manchester and Concord are both rich in history and culture, and they're the perfect home bases for travelers looking to enjoy the great outdoors, of which there is abundance in New Hampshire. I recently spent a long weekend exploring the idyllic towns throughout New Hampshire, and I fell in love with both Manchester and Concord. Downtown
I was lucky enough to stay at a hotel in downtown Concord, which I fell in love with instantly. The small-town charm and idyllic aesthetic of this downtown made me feel like I was in a movie. Main Street is the pride and joy of Concord, and it's not hard to see why. There's so much beauty and charm on Main Street that you simply cannot be in a bad mood while meandering down this boulevard. Since downtown Concord is also home to some of the best shops and restaurants in the city, it's easy to get lost in some cute boutiques or a good meal while exploring.
The Scenic Byway
If you're traveling to Manchester or Concord, I'd recommend you take a nice drive along the Currier & Ives Scenic Byway. This beautiful scenic drive will give you an immediate sense of New Hampshire's boundless natural beauty, especially if you're visiting in the fall. Even locals can't help but fawn over the gorgeous autumn foliage along this scenic drive. Some locals even bike this 30-mile byway, which is a great way to get active and see some of the most beautiful natural sights in this region of New Hampshire.
Antique Alley
Anyone who loves shopping for antiques will find their own special slice of heaven in New Hampshire. Along Route 4, you'll find "Antique Alley," which stretches from Portsmouth to Concord. This popular shopping route features over 500 antique shops and dealers, so you're sure to find some spectacular antiques during your day of shopping. Even though I'm not a huge antique shopper, I did decide to explore some of the stops along Antique Alley, and I saw some truly beautiful, special pieces along this route.
Skiing
One of the main reasons I decided to visit this region of New Hampshire was because of its skiing. There was some snow on the slopes, and I was itching to get into a pair of skis for the first time of the season. A few locals recommended that I check out popular nearby ski spots like Pat's Peak Ski Area and Mt. Sunapee. I ended up spending an action-packed afternoon at Pat's Peak, and it certainly whetted my appetite for the ski season. The skiing in New Hampshire is some of the best I've ever experienced, so I was glad I took advantage of my short stay in Concord to hit the slopes at least once.
The Arts
Even though Manchester and Concord are relatively small towns, they place a big emphasis on the arts. Concord, for instance, is home to the Capital Center for the Arts and the Currier Museum of Art. From performing arts to visual arts, Concord has something to offer its art-loving locals. I took advantage of Concord's art scene and spent a few hours wandering through the renowned Currier Museum of Art, which features works by Picasso, O'Keefe, Monet, and more. In Manchester, the most treasured theater venue is the historic Palace Theatre, which has been putting on local productions for more than a century. New Hampshire locals love art, and it's so evident when you visit towns like Manchester and Concord.
