I drive through the southeastern portion of the United States all the time. I travel for work, so I'm constantly on the road for one reason or another. Over the years, I've gotten to the point where I can basically tell where I am and how long it's going to take me to get to my destination, and my predictions are usually extremely accurate. While it's good to be familiar with the roads on which I drive, it's also led to a tendency for me to ignore the midpoints of these travels. I've driven by a lot of different communities and not really given them that much thought. That all changed recently, as I was driving through South Carolina. I got a call from the office that told me that my entire day of meetings had been canceled, so suddenly I had 24 hours to myself. I decided it was time to take a closer look at one of these communities. I decided I was going to explore Florence. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, as I travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a Florence, SC hotel room as soon as I needed one.
The Museums
One of the first things I noticed about Florence was that it is home to a lot of history. Specifically, I counted several different museums that were situated near the middle of this small city. I walked through a museum dedicated to the Civil War and was fascinated by some of the historical artifacts there. From there, I went to the county museum where I saw classic works of art and science, dating back generations. It was nice to see all of this out there for the residents to enjoy, and I spent a couple of hours doing so myself.
The Antique Stores
Perhaps it's because of all the museums or for some other reason, but I also noticed that there were a lot of different antique stores around town. I spent the afternoon browsing in many of them. Not only were the items that were for sale quite interesting, but I had very nice conversations with the shop owners and workers at every stop. I did wind up buying a few things that I wasn't planning on purchasing, but that was fine by me as the pieces are beautiful and will look great in my home.
The Dining
One of the people I spoke to during the day told me about a fantastic barbecue place that locals swore by, and I decided to give that a try for dinner. It's an unassuming place from the outside, but the food is anything but. I had a pulled pork sandwich, which was divine, the macaroni and cheese, which was creamy and decadent, and a nice cup of baked beans that really brought the entire meal together. I ate quickly, but soon succumbed to the richness of the meal overall.
