Located right across the Rio Grande from the Mexican town of Nuevo Laredo, this Texas town has a unique, rich culture that you'll only find in border cities. San Agustin de Laredo Historic District
My first stop on my Laredo adventure was the San Agustin de Laredo Historic District. This beautiful old plaza is located in the heart of town, and it's surrounded by picturesque buildings that date back to the 1700s and 1800s. From the gorgeous San Agustin Cathedral to the pretty Casa Ortiz, there are a number of incredible historic sites in this vibrant district, and wandering through the San Agustin de Laredo Historic District really helped me get a great feel for the history and heritage of this border town.
San Bernardo Avenue
After learning about the history and heritage of Laredo, I wandered over to the San Bernardo Avenue District to get a better feel for the town's culture. This district is full of Mexican import stores, and as you walk down the street you may even forget that you're in the US and not Mexico. The atmosphere of this lively street will make you feel as if you've crossed the border and now are in a charming little village in Mexico, and this avenue is also a great place to buy some unique souvenirs from your time in Laredo.
The Rio Grande
Naturally, one of the most defining elements of Laredo is the Rio Grande, which separates the town from Mexico. Locals actually take advantage of the fact that the Rio Grande is in their backyard, and they go for walks, runs and bike rides along the river. I decided to explore the river from the water, so I rented a kayak and paddled downstream. Don't worry – there is plenty of border security along the river, so I never felt unsafe as I enjoyed views of Laredo from the river.
