When you travel in Wisconsin, quickly learn that there is a lot more going on there than football, cheese, beer and sausage. You find all of these little pockets that are filled with beauty, with great people and wonderful things to do. You may not think that there is a lot to do in the southern part of Wisconsin – I sure didn't – but as it turns out I was completely wrong. A lot of circumstances came together recently when I was in Milwaukee on business, but the long and short of it was that I wound up with 24 hours to spend in a little town called Lake Geneva. I had never heard of it before I got there, but it didn't take long for me to realize that I was quite lucky indeed to have a day to spend in such a place. I wasn't worried about finding a Lake Geneva hotel room, either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. I booked a Lake Geneva hotel room in seconds. The day I spent there was so fantastic that I need to tell people about it so that they don't miss out on this place as I did for too long.
The Path
I had been in meetings for several days and felt a bit pent up by the time I got to Lake Geneva. It was a beautiful day and I wanted to enjoy the sun and get some exercise. I found something called the Shore Path. This is a path that is made for walkers, runners and bicyclists. It runs along the lake around which the town is built. The scene is breathtaking. You walk and look at the waves coming in and appreciate the foliage that provides you with shade that makes the entire experience incredibly pleasant. I spent a couple of hours taking it all in.
The Homes
As you walk around town – and you really can make your way to where you want to go on foot there – you see what it's like to live there. In a word, it's luxurious. The homes are enormous, and like just about everything else there the biggest ones are built around Geneva Lake. A large number of people who are here in the summer use these homes as vacation properties or second homes. As such, many of them are basically empty throughout much of the year.
The Food
Over the past 200 years or so, people primarily from Northern Europe settled in Wisconsin. That means that a lot of Germans moved here, and you see that cultural influence around the state. That's the case in Lake Geneva as well. I stopped into a German pub for dinner, and the food and beers were excellent. The atmosphere was that of a traditional German bier hall, and the patrons could not have been friendlier.
