HotelTonight – Sturgeon Bay Hotels
If you look at a map of Wisconsin, it looks like a right hand that's being held up to your face. The "thumb" of the hand points to the right, or the east, and I've always wondered what was up there. I'd been to Wisconsin many times, but I had never been farther north than the "base" of the thumb, which is the city of Green Bay. One day, I had a bunch of meetings canceled. I was set to fly home the next day, so I could either wait for that flight out of Green Bay, try to move it up a day or take that 24 hours to do something different. I decided on doing something different. I was going to explore that "thumb" a bit. I chose the biggest city on the peninsula, which was also one of the closest: Sturgeon Bay. It was only about an hour north of where I was, so I jumped in my car to head up there. I wasn't worried about finding lodging. The State Park
The first thing I wanted to do was explore the water, so I punched in Potawatomi State Park into my GPS and made my way over there. I was glad I did as soon as I got out of my car. This was a wondrous place that was filled with sand dunes, hiking trails and even an observation tower where you can see above it all and take in panoramic views. I spent a few hours here enjoying the trails and talking to people who were out enjoying the beautiful day. I was somewhat surprised to learn that nearly all of them were locals.
The Water
Sturgeon Bay sits on Green Bay – not the city, but the body of water that's a bay that runs off of Lake Michigan. It's the water that separates the "thumb" of Wisconsin from the rest of the state. I decided to step out onto the water by way of a kayak. I rented one at a different park and took in all of the scenery. There were enormous pine trees all over the place and cliffs that dropped right into the water. I paddled around for hours, marveling at all of the activity that was taking place.
The Dining
I wanted something truly down-home for dinner, as I had worked up quite an appetite. I heard about a local tavern that had been in town for generations. Specifically, I had heard that it served incredible burgers and very cold beer. I stopped in and was immediately greeted warmly as I sat at the bar. I ordered a double cheeseburger and a beer, and both arrived quickly. The burger had clearly been cooked over an open flame, and the Wisconsin cheese melted all over the meat and the bun. It was a delicious and unbelievably inexpensive meal.
