Germantown is one of Philadelphia's oldest neighborhoods, as well as one of its most historically significant. This historic neighborhood was the birthplace of the anti-slavery movement in America, a temporary home of George Washington, and the site of a major Revolutionary War Battle. Despite the fact that this neighborhood is steeped in history, few tourists actually take the time to visit Germantown during their stay in Philadelphia. I didn't want to skip this charming, historically important neighborhood while I was in Philadelphia, though. Colonial Germantown
Germantown was first settled in 1683 by the Germans and the Dutch, and it remained one of Philadelphia's most important neighborhoods for centuries thereafter. Today, many of Germantown's original colonial buildings are still intact, and they have been carefully preserved and restored over the years. The first thing I did in Germantown was tour the colonial area of this neighborhood, and I walked past a number of historic old buildings, including the Germantown White House, the Wyck House and the Mennonite Meetinghouse, among many others. Many of these buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Germantown Avenue
My main suggestion for anyone visiting Germantown is to carve out a day to stroll along Germantown Avenue. Along the way, you'll pass many of the neighborhood's historic sites, but you'll also come across eclectic shops and trendy eateries. In the span of one block, you could pass a home that's over 200 years old and next to it you will find a charming coffee shop. There are surprises around every corner on Germantown Avenue, and I can easily say that it's one of the most pleasant streets to take a stroll in Philadelphia.
Parks and Recreation
Not only does Germantown boast an impressive selection of historic homes and buildings, but this neighborhood also features a great variety of parks and public spaces. You'll have no trouble finding greenery and open spaces in Germantown, which offers more than a dozen parks. Some of the most popular of these public parks and recreation areas include the beautiful Awbury Arboretum, Clifford Park and Fernhill Park.
