San Jose is a big city, and it's a city that continues to grow and change in a positive way. I've been going to San Jose for years for work, and it was during the past decade or so that I started to notice some of these changes, at least from a visitor's point of view, which admittedly is somewhat limited. The Greenery
A lot of people picture San Jose as this bustling metropolis that's dominated by office buildings and roads. While there is some of that in the city overall, that is definitely not what's happening in South San Jose. This is a part of town where there are wide-open spaces all around. There are parks, trails, nature preserves and lookouts, and I spent several hours trying to visit as many of them as I could. I saw families at play, owners tossing balls for their dogs, bicyclists, hikers, runners and others like me who just wanted to enjoy the fresh air.
The Quality of Life
After seeing how much greenery and open space there was in South San Jose, I wasn't surprised to find out that the quality of life is very high here as well. I stopped at a cafe for a coffee after all of that walking and struck up a conversation with a local who was sitting nearby. She told me that the schools here are extremely well-regarded, that the average home value is quite high and that the vast majority of people who live in this part of town are professionals. There are businesses that are moving here as well, but apparently the residents want to preserve what they have in terms of feel.
The Cuisine
Much like the quality of life, the quality of restaurants here is also quite high. My new friend at the café told me to try a seafood place just up the road. I was surprised by the recommendation, but I decided to give it a try. Not only was this a seafood restaurant, but it was one that only served the freshest of meals. I had the ahi tuna, and it was as if I had caught it myself given its firm texture and distinct flavor.
